The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the recent increase in petrol prices by about N1,000 in various parts of the country.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited on Tuesday increased the price of its products across its retail outlets from ₦568 to ₦885 per litre.
This follows denial by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, that the Federal Government had approved the fuel price hike.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) also condemned the fuel price hike and demanded its immediate reversal.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the party described the fuel price hike as unwise, especially at this time.
PDP advises President Bola Tinubu to save the country from further socio-economic challenges by immediately reversing the latest fuel price hike.
The party described the move as anti-people and a display of indifference to the plight of millions of Nigerians who can no longer afford daily food, medicine and basic support for their families due to the high cost of living.
The statement read: “Most Nigerians are now living below the poverty line, businesses are collapsing daily as the Naira now exchanges for over N1,600 to a dollar with an inflation rate of over 34 per cent.
“Our party reiterates that with agile, transparent and innovative management of national resources and refining capacity, petrol price should not exceed N250 per litre in Nigeria.”
