In a bold effort to revitalize basic sports in Eastern Nigeria, veterans of the Nigerian national team and basketball professionals with foreign headquarters Kelechi Anuna and Ike Diogu have announced the launch of a new initiative focused on youth aimed at developing talents and promoting healthy talents through sport.
The program, which is destined to launch through schools in the eastern region, has already selected its first beneficiaries: Mbieri and Orlu in the state of IMO, with a third school in Mbano currently under development.
“Sport has given us the opportunity to be successful, not only as athletes but as individuals,” said Anuna. “This initiative is our way of returning to young people, using the same tool that contributed to modeling our lives.”
The duo underlined the disparity in sports support between the eastern region and other parts of Nigeria and the world, noting that limited resources and infrastructures have retained many young talents.
“Unlike other regions, sport has not received the attention he deserves in the East,” said Diogu. “We want to change that narrative, start with schools.”
The initiative focuses on the involvement of schools through training camps, tutoring, donations of sports equipment and updates of the structures. While basketball is the driving force of the program, the organizers say that the broader goal is to promote sports culture and the empowerment of young people in multiple disciplines.
“We believe it takes a village to grow a child and to build a movement,” said Anuna. “We ask our communities, local leaders and professional companions to join us on this mission.”
With the initial phase in progress, the program aims to expand throughout the region, reaching multiple schools and communities in the coming months.
