APC to adopt consensus option in Imo local council elections

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma said on Tuesday that all All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship and councillor candidates in the September 21 local government elections in the state would emerge through consensus arrangements.

Uzodimma stated this when he addressed aspirants and stakeholders at the party secretariat in Owerri.

He said the decision to choose a consensus candidate was to promote unity and cohesion within the party.

The governor said: โ€œConsensus will be made for 27 chairperson positions and 305 ward counselors.

โ€œThis decision is important following the high number of candidates interested in the poll.

โ€œThe number of candidates for the advisory position is currently more than 800 people, and for the chairman position more than 200 people.

โ€œThere are three modes of nomination in the APC Constitution, namely through direct primaries, indirect primaries, and the third is through consensus.

โ€œWe will look at the specifics of each LGA. Our first choice is consensus.

โ€œIf it is difficult to reach a consensus, we will hold a contest, using direct or indirect methods to select candidates.โ€

He congratulated the party on its victory in the Supreme Court, and said the decision had paved the way for the smooth conduct of the upcoming assembly elections.

โ€œAs of now, that seems impossible due to insecurity in various local governments in the state,โ€ he added.

The governor, who reminded party faithful that the APC is one family in the state, urged them to make sacrifices for the victory of the party.

โ€œWhat I would consider this time is that the cost of everything is high.

โ€œI would appeal to the parties to enter this contest with one spirit.

โ€œThose who win, we will encourage to work together with those who don’t win.

“For those who do not win, because the amount is too much and the money involved is also large, we will try our best to return the money,” he concluded.

In his brief remarks, the APC chairman in the state, Mr. MacDonald Ebere, thanked the governor for his leadership role.
