The top of African ranked table tennis star, Quadri Aruna from Nigeria and Hana Teaoda from Egypt, will begin their search for global glory on Saturday, May 17, when the ITTF 2025 World Championship took place in Doha, Qatar.
Running from 17 to 25 May, this prestigious tournament will unite the world elite players in the sophisticated Lusail Multipurpose Hall and the Sports Complex of the University of Qatar. Athletes will compete in five big events: male and female singles, men’s and female doubles, and mixed doubles.
This year’s edition marked the symbolic return to Doha, 21 years after the capital of Qatar became the first Middle East city to host the World Championship in 2004.
Aruna, the first African who reached the quarter-finals of the world championship, will open his campaign at the men’s single against Victor Ishiy Brazil-Fiang who he defeated 4-2 in the 2021 edition in Houston, USA. The Nigerian star will aim to repeat the performance in Doha.

Other African representatives in Lajang Putra including Darara Dufera (Ethiopia) vs Oh Junsung (South Korea); Aly Ghallab (Egypt) vs Eduard Ionescu (Romania); Fabio Rakotoarimanana (Madagaskar) vs Darko Jorgic (Slovenia); Kokou Fanny (Togo) vs Alexis Lebrun (France); Wassim Esses (Tunisia) vs Juan Perez (Spain), and Mohamed El-Beali (Egypt) vs Anton Kallberg (Sweden)
At the women’s singles, African champion Hana Thuna will face Jamuwa Wu Australia in the first round. Other key matches including Yousra Helmy (Egypt) vs Jocelyn Lam (New Zealand); Hope Udoaka (Nigeria) vs Giulia Takahashi (Brazil); Rochica Sonday (South Africa) vs Chen Xingtong (China); Mariam Alhodaby (Egypt) vs Sabine Winter (Germany), and Danisha Patel (South Africa) vs. Andrea Todorovic (Croatia)
Mixed doubles events will also feature strong African representatives with Omotayo & Kabirat Ayoola (Nigeria) vs. Mahmoud Helmy & Hey Fathy (Egypt); Fabio Rakotoarimanana & Hanitra Raharimanana (Madagaskar) vs Hugo Calderano & Bruna Takahashi (Brazil); Matthew Kuti & Ajoke Ojomu (Nigeria) vs Sora Matsushima & Miwa Harimoto (Japan), and Milhane Jellouli & Amina Kessaci (Algeria) vs Ahmed Korani & Maryam Ali (Qatar).
