Ask an urgent action on about Mbaise Power abandoned projects

Abuja, 21 May 2025-The important legal practitioner and the native of Mbaise, the head Malachy C. Nwaekpe, issued a strong appeal to the federal ministry of power, asking for immediate actions on the long-abandon MBAISE transmission line and subordinate projects in the state of IMO.

In a formal letter dated May 16, 2025, Capo Nwaekpe, writing through his law firm, Mc Chambers, urged the honorable minister of power to complete the 20 x 60mva, 132/33kv projects of the transmission station located in Ibeku to Aboh Mbaise, who, according to what reported, have been abandoned since the beginning of 2009.

According to the letter, the projects – initially managed by the Nigeria transmission company (TCN) – were intended to respond to the power needs of the Mbaise district but were left incomplete, immersing the region in over a decade of darkness.

Chapter Nwaekpe stressed that Mbaise, known as the most densely populated area of West Africa with over a million residents, has undergone immense arrest strokes due to the absence of electrical infrastructure. He complained that “the very creative young people who constitute about 60 percent of the population” continue to suffer because of the negligence of the government.

The legal petition stressed that a public hearing on the matter had already been conducted by the Committee for public petitions of the House of Representatives. During the hearings, TCN admitted that the materials, including 13 transmission towers, were delivered, but no significant progress on site have been carried out due to alleged meteorological concerns.

The support documents referred to in the petition, marked as an attachment from A D, include the petition of the Chamber, the Nerc investigation report, the on -site photographs of the abandoned project and the details of the contractors involved.

Chapter Nwaekpe issued a 30 -day ultimatum at the Federal Ministry of Power and TCN, warning that the inability to act would lead to legal proceedings. “This letter acts as a pre-action notice,” he wrote, adding that a mandamus order would be sought to force the completion of the project.

The letter was also copied to the MD/CEO of the Nigeria transmission company (TCN) and stamped “received” by the relevant offices.

While the community awaits the action, the people of Mbaise remains in a desperate need for a resolution, hoping for an end of prolonged blackout that has suffocated development and productivity in the region.
