Abuja (basic reporter) Taekwondo Prodigy of Nigeria, Ogechukwu Kalu, left for Algeria to represent the country in the inaugural games of the African school (Assg). This frustration for his older brother Chijioke (Jnr), who had qualified for the games of the Federation of the International Sports University (FISU) of 2025 but could not participate in the games due to the inability of the Federal University of Technology, the inability of Owerri (Futo) to satisfy the deadline for his participation

It has been reported that the young athlete left the bank of Nigeria through the international wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, in the early hours of 23 July.

Basic journalists report that the inaugural edition of the African school sports games began on Wednesday 23 July in Algeria and should work until August 6, 2025.

Ogechukwu, a sixteen-year-old multi-talented athlete of the State of Abia, is a product of the Mentoma initiative of the Rangers International FC Foundation and acts as an ambassador for the multiple framework of the COPE and Live Health Awareness Foundation.

He will compete in the Taekwondo male event, where he aims to guarantee a finish on the podium.

Through the Mentome program, Ogechukwu has developed mental and emotional vital skills, allowing him to transform anxiety and pressure into force, equipping him to proudly represent Nigeria on the international scene.

The Rangers International FC Foundation, in collaboration with the Cope and Live Mental Health Awareness Foundation, is also expanding its support through the Coli Mental Health Academy (www.coliacademy.org). The initiative provides basic training for mental health, consultancy tools and personal development courses to help people unlock their potential and realize their dreams.

Kalu is a student of the Government Science Technical College, Abuja, where he is studying electrical installations and maintenance works. He is Kalu Chijioke’s younger brother (Jnr), who had qualified for the Games of the Federation of International Sports University (FISU) of 2025.

The Fisu World University games of the world’s largest multi-Sport events currently carry out in Germany from 16 to 27 July, in five cities of the Reno-Ruhr region, including Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Hagen and Mülheim an der Ruhr, as well as in the capital, Berlin.

Kalu Chijioke (Jnr), a university statistics student at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (Futo), has been seen as a strong medal perspective for Nigeria. However, it was not able to participate due to the failure to dear the registration deadline: a result raised by poor planning, corruption and poor administration by the sports officials of Futo responsible for the preparation, documentation and accreditation of athletes.

When contacted, the director of Sport of Futo, Mrs. Patience Nnennaya, initially refused to comment, later claiming that only the Nigeria University Games Association (Nuga) could face preparations for the event.

In the same way, Prof. Chikwendu Orji, dean of the student affairs of Futo, observed at the moment that “he hopes that Futo would have participated” in the games, despite the missing deadline.

The president of the Nuga, prof. Bawa Muhammed, expressed disappointment in different Nigerian universities for their lack of commitment, which has hindered the fundraising efforts and has deprived the qualified athletes of the opportunity to show their talents globally.

Speaking of the failed registration of Futo, Prof. Bawa said:

“Futo did not pay the shares in time and the portal was finally closed. This is unacceptable, especially for the future of the students who have trained and prepared widely for this competition. Our talents must not be authorized to slide away from our hands.”

The CSP Kalu Chijioke (SNR), father of the affected athlete, criticized the management of the situation by the school, remembering that Futo had previously produced Olympos such as Chika Chukwumerije and Elizabeth Anyanacho.

“I owe to my son the duty to defend it, it doesn’t matter what it takes. As a director of sport, what else should your inheritance be?”

“Even if the school can say that it lacks funds, it is its responsibility for director of sport that appreciates the infinite possibilities of sport to inform the management of the enormous benefits that could mature at the university through the participation of the Fisu.”

It also questioned how the rigidity of young people could be addressed if talented young people, especially from the south -est, denied access to the opportunities available for their peers in other parts of the country
