The University of Lagos branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-UNILAG) has issued a stark warning of a potential strike if the Nigerian government fails to address its long-standing grievances, following nationwide protests.
“We are sensitizing the public to urge the government not to strike. If there is no significant result after all these protests, we will decide to strike at the next NEC meeting,” said Prof. Kayode Adebayo, Chairman of ASUU-UNILAG, during the protest on Thursday in Lagos.
The weeks-long protests have highlighted ASUU’s frustration over unfulfilled government promises.
Dr. Dele Ashiru, former chairman of ASUU-UNILAG, stressed the dire financial situation faced by lecturers and accused the government of neglecting its responsibilities in the education sector.
“We have been receiving the same salary since 2009. Despite several requests and consultations for the government to renegotiate, the government has not listened,” complained Dr. Ashiru.

Students joined their lecturers in a solidarity march, voicing demands for increased funding and better conditions for university education in Nigeria. They carried placards with messages such as “Stop establishing universities you cannot fund” and “Education is life; proper funding for university education is non-negotiable.”
The complaints raised by ASUU-UNILAG include the completion of the renegotiation of the FGN/ASUU agreement, the release of salaries withheld due to the strike, and funding for the revitalization of state universities.
“We love our classrooms. We love our students, it is the Nigerian government that is striking against you, not ASUU,” Prof. Adebayo asserted, underscoring the union’s commitment to its members and the wider academic community.
The deadlock continues to escalate as ASUU awaits a concrete response from government, with the threat of a strike looming large in the near future.
