Former vice -president Atiku Abubakar has reaffirmed his intention to contest the presidential elections of 2027, swearing to save Nigeria from what he described as his current state of “intensive care unit”.
Atiku, who spoke in an interview with this day on Sunday through his former spokesperson for the countryside, Tunde Olusunle, said that the country degenerated to unbearable levels of poverty, pain and anguish, stressing that an urgent intervention was necessary.
“I will manage in 2027. Nigeria must be definitely saved from the intensive care unit to which it was delivered.
“Degeneration in our country, the level of poverty and pain, anguish, is unacceptable,” he said.
According to Olusunle, Atiku complained of the “deception, the loss of values, the canvas without obstacles and the absolute lack of responsibility”, which according to him must worry every patriot, adding that he was offering himself to guide the “reclamation and reconstruction” of the nation.
Atiku is a key promoter of the opposition coalition pursuant to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), whose 2027 presidential ticket is already generating strong competition.
His declaration should further complicate the negotiations within the coalition, with the former governor of the State of Anambra, Peter Obi, and the former transport minister, Rotimi Amaechi, pushing for the ticket to be divided to the south.
The former vice -president, however, insisted on the fact that the ADC coalition would have galvanized the mass support in view of the 2027 polls, rubbing the concerns for the scarce performance of the party in the recent farewell elections.
“ADC is guiding a powerful mass movement that will shock the world; we will stage the status quo in a way that will leave the doubtful,” he added.
