Atiku extended support to organizers of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has supported the proposed #FreeNnamdiKanuNow rally scheduled for October 20 in Abuja, to pressure the Nigerian government to release detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, on Tuesday, called on political leaders and other stakeholders from the South East region to join him in a peaceful march to the Presidential Villa, to demand the immediate release of the IPOB leader.

In a post he shared on his X account, Sowore had stated that he was ready to put aside political differences to uphold justice for Kanu.

“I will put aside my differences with some politicians for one reason.

“I challenge any politician or person of good conscience from the South East who says they want Nnamdi Kanu released to stop the rhetoric. The time to act is NOW. Let us march to Aso Rock Villa.”

While providing an update on the protests on Thursday, Sowore posted on his social media account that the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow march will take place on Monday, October 20.

“We now have a date for the historic #FreeNnamdiKanuNow rally at Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. October 20 at 7am,” Sowore wrote on X.

Reacting to the announcement in a post he shared, the former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said that he supports the rally, adding that the organizers have his full support.

“The continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains an open wound on the conscience of our nation and a stain on our faith in the rule of law.

“To defy the court order granting him bail is an abuse of power and an attack on justice.

“Therefore, I cast my vote in full support of the campaign led by @YeleSowore for his immediate release or trial.

“We are failing as patriots if we allow Kanu’s case to fester because of another wound that this nation cannot heal.”
