Tinubu visit to the plateau is a confirmation that the normal Nigerians are not his priority
With great bands of the country still under siege from the Irregente Insecurity and thousands of innocent lives lost, it is profoundly unfortunate that President Bola Tinubu does not have, for once, worthy of visiting any of the states affected to commission citizens in mourning.
Today, however, the president suddenly recalled the state of the plateau – one of the most terrified parts of the North Central – do not share the pain of the people, but to participate in a social event under the aegis of the national president of his party.
It is a sad reflection of the priorities and an evident mockery of leadership that while the families of the plateau continue to bury their loved ones, the president Tinubu has chosen to embellish a political funeral rather than being with people in their darkest hour.
Between the national president APC and its president, what we have witnessed today is a heartless exhibition of contempt for empathy, compassion and dignity of human life.
From Benue to Niger and more recently Kwara, the entire central region of the North has endured some of the most horrible waves of violence in recent history. However, not once the government led by the APC has deemed it necessary to physically support the victims or console their families.
Even when Tinubu made a symbolic visit to the state of Benue in June, he never took the briga to set foot in Yelewata – the epicenter of the massacre. Instead, he comfortably concluded his trip to Makurdi, turning his back on people whose tears and blood still stain the ground.
Now again, he is in the state of the plateau, not to console mourning or reassure the broken, but to celebrate and make cheerful with his party elite while people cry.
The message could not be clearer: this is a president who would prefer to ban on rather than feel – a leader who finds pleasure where people find pain.
The Nigerian people are looking at – and they will remember.
Signed:
Atiku Abubakar
Vice President of Nigeria, 1999-2007
Abuja.
