A group, Change Nigeria Now (CNN) has called on Nigerian youths to join their counterparts in other parts of the country on August 1 for a peaceful protest to demand an end to bad governance in the country.
The group stated that its call for protests was not for violence or chaos, but a patriotic movement to “hold those in power accountable for their actions”… “making life unbearable for so many.”
CNN in a statement on Sunday signed by its chairman, Comrade Muhammed Ishaq, said “after years of unfulfilled promises and squandering of public funds, the patience of Nigerian citizens, especially the youth, has finally worn thin. Economic mismanagement has resulted in untold hardship, and the long-suffering people are now ready to take a stand.
“Despite the misdirected allocation of billions of Naira to shady religious merchants and fake youth groups who have previously hijacked the narrative of the protests in the media, claiming to be the organizers and now withdrawing their support only to discourage and intimidate others from participating, Nigerian youths are now more determined than ever to rise up and demand change. The planned protests on August 1, 2024, dubbed the ‘Days of Rage,’ will go ahead as scheduled, with patriotic and responsible Nigerian youths leading the charge.
“On August 1, 2024, patriotic and responsible Nigerian youths will gather across the country to demand an end to the bad governance that has made life unbearable for many. This is not a call for violence or chaos, but a peaceful protest to reclaim our rights as citizens and hold those in power accountable for their actions.”

The group also lamented that Nigerian leaders in recent years have squandered public funds on frivolous ventures, ignoring the basic needs of the people. And that “the time has come to end this culture of waste, corruption and nepotism”.
He also said, “This is not just about making noise or simply expressing dissatisfaction; it is about demanding concrete action that addresses the pressing issues affecting our country. It is about holding those in power accountable for their actions and ensuring that our collective efforts towards progress are not in vain.
“The lies and deceit perpetrated by self-interested groups and individuals will not deter us. We will not be swayed by empty promises or intimidated by threats. Our resolve is unshakeable, and our determination to bring about positive change is unwavering.
“We invite all Nigerians who share our desire for positive change to join us on this historic day. Together, we will rise up against bad governance and reclaim our right to a better life. We will make our voices heard, and we will not be silenced.
“Join us on August 1, 2024, as we march peacefully to demand an end to the status quo and a better future for Nigeria. Together, we can make a difference and create a brighter future for ourselves and our future generations.”
