Aviation workers end protest over 50% IGR cut

The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has postponed a protest planned for Wednesday.

Workers on September 12 announced plans for a strike following the Federal Government’s 50% cut in internally generated revenue (IGR) from airlines.

NAAPE is the parent body of unions in the aviation sector.

The association comprises members of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the Association of Senior Staff of the Nigerian Air Transport Service (ATSSSAN), the Association of Aviation Professionals of Nigeria (ANAP) and the Amalgamated Union of Civil Service Technical and Recreational Employees (AUPCTRE).

The union has been at loggerheads with the federal government over the airline’s 50% IGR cut.

Although the government has proposed reviewing the reduction to 20%, aviation unions are adamant there will be no reduction.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo is expected to meet union leaders regarding the planned protest on Tuesday.

NAAPE Secretary-General Olayinka Abioye confirmed the suspension of the protest in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.

He said the protest was suspended due to ongoing discussions on the issue by higher industry authorities.

The statement read: “Based on information we have received about the ongoing discussions by higher authorities regarding the 50 percent tax cut by the Federal Government, I would like to immediately inform our esteemed members that the planned protest action scheduled for tomorrow is hereby suspended pending the outcome of these discussions which we will convey to you all.”
