Avocats Sans Frontieris, ASF, have announced their intention to collaborate with the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Nuj, in improving digital rights in Nigeria.
This was made known when a delegation led by the member of the Board of Directors, Ivan Pandoff, visited the national secretariat on Monday.
According to Ivan Panoff, the E-Driti project would establish mechanisms that guarantee independent and fair access to justice, protecting the fundamental human rights of journalists in Nigeria, as well as legal assistance and assistance to vulnerable people, such as victims of human rights violations, in national and international jurisdictions.
While underlined the importance of the current national conference, he underlined the need to develop skills through training and collaboration with local partners.
He mentioned the advantage at the International Institute of Journalism, IIJ, on digital rights and on data security.
He said: “It is important for the citizen with your help or assistance to know how to protect their electronic rights and the dangers and the advantages of using digital tools.
“I learned that you have a school here and I would like to hear you speak and see how we can associate with the school for the near future because the guidelines of the project are guaranteeing sustainability.”
Ivan Panff advised journalists to control their sources during the use of artificial intelligence to generate their data.
He said: “In other words, the IA is an excellent tool for us, but journalism ethics is necessary”.
Even speaking, the director of the town, Avocats San Frontieri, Mrs. Angela Uzoma revealed the continuous collaboration with Nuj with a member of the project focused on press freedom, therefore the concept of digital rights for the press.

Responding, the National President of the Union of Journalists of Nigeria (Nuj) Comrade Alhassan Yahya praised Avocats Sans Frontiers for the visit and for investments in Nigerian journalists
He assured the organization that Nuj would be at the forefront of creating greater visibility on the project while asking the ASF to involve the IIJ in his partnership for a greater development of skills for journalists and urged them to guarantee sustainability
“Nuj is the mother of all practicing journalists in Nigeria with 36 state tips. Our work is very simple and I want to make sure Nuj will continue to work with you.
“Let me thank you more sincerely for investing in Nigeria. If you cross the Cyber Crime Act, it is an act that is hindering the way we operate as journalists in Nigeria and I think the time has come for all of us to be stopped to review this act.
“In the same way, I assure you that we will do everything that is humanly possible to present cases of digital issues to your organization because I am aware that you have lawyers who are willing and ready to defend journalists.
“We have the IIj, an institute belonging to Nuj with the sole objective of training and redeveloping journalists throughout the country.
“If you look at this place, it is a very vast land and in the sustainability area, we will do everything possible to support what you are doing.
“We are trying to see how to renovate the institute and own our radio station. That radio station will do a lot to ensure that arriving people will learn the practical aspect of our profession and above all it will be used as a collection point to make sure that Nigerian journalists are the best to protect, promote and make the government responsible and also responsible citizens.
“We assure you that the advice will work with you to reach your project. The president of Nuj FCT is here and I assure you that your organization will achieve your goal and allow us to make sure there is the concept of sustainability.

The meeting was attended by the national secretary of the Union, Achike Chudu, the National Deputy Secretary, the Prime Minister Nuj FCT Comrade Grace Ike, the vice -president Yahaya Ndambabo, the secretary of the Council Jide Oyekunle and other members of the Asf France delegation.
