A bank customer in Minna, Niger state, retaliated against suspected armed robbers on Friday, disarming one of the attackers and shooting a gang member during an attempted robbery.
The incident occurred along Shiroro Road near Iya-Femi restaurant shortly after the victim reportedly withdrew ₦10 million from a bank.
According to security sources, the robbers followed the victim out of the bank before intercepting his Toyota Camry along the road.
The suspects allegedly fired several gunshots into the air and ordered the man to hand over the money.
However, the victim resisted and engaged in a scuffle with one of the attackers, during which he managed to take possession of the suspect’s AK-47 rifle.
In the process, the victim fired a shot that hit one of the robbers, causing the gang to panic and flee.
Despite resistance, the suspects fled in the victim’s Toyota Camry containing the ₦10 million.
On the spot, while fleeing, the robbers also abandoned their car, a Toyota Corolla, on the spot.
The Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident, saying officers recovered the abandoned vehicle and rifle used in the attack.
Abiodun added that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Minna for further investigation.
He said efforts were underway to track down the fleeing suspects and recover the stolen money.
