When the Prophet (saw) guided the one seeking salvation to control his tongue, this was an indication of the grave dangers of the tongue, particularly when it is given free rein. Getting used to insulting and swearing is one of the greatest dangers of the language. Many people think about it too lightly and therefore curse their children, transportation, those who contradict their opinions and even those with whom they joke. Therefore, we will report some of what has been reported to warn against the dangers of swearing and making it a habit.
The meaning and dangers of the curse
Curse means the deprivation and exclusion of the goodness or Mercy of Allah Almighty, and this can never be the habit of believers. The Prophet said: The believer does not slander, curse or speak obscenely or vulgarly. In a Hadith written on the authority of Abu Hurayrah the Prophet said: It does not become a man of truth to be a curser.
Cursing a believer is a serious crime
Cursing a believer is a serious crime that a Muslim should never dare to commit. To illustrate the enormity of this crime, it is sufficient to quote the Hadith in which the Prophet says: Cursing a believer is like killing him. Commenting on this Hadith, An-Nawawi said: According to the apparent meaning of the Hadeeth, both killing and cursing are equal in prohibition, however, killing is more serious. Other scholars have stated: Cursing a believer is like killing him compared to prohibition, guilt and deprivation. This is because cursing is the deprivation of the mercy of Allah the Almighty, and killing is the deprivation of life.
Watch out for the curse rebound!
When a person curses something that does not deserve to be cursed, the curse rebounds and returns to him, even if what is cursed is the subjugated wind. In a Hadith on the authority of Abdullah Ibn Abbas it was mentioned that the wind blew away the outer garment of a man and, therefore, he cursed the wind. The Prophet said to him: Do not curse the wind because it is commanded [by Allah to blow]. Whoever curses anything and does not deserve the curse, the curse will fall on him.
Do not curse an animal or mount
Often people think that this is something trivial and curse animals and their means of transportation. These people do not take into account the fact that by doing so they are mixing themselves with cursed things. It is said that the Prophet was on a journey in which there was also a woman of the Ansaar riding a she-camel. The camel bothered her and so she cursed it. After hearing her, the Messenger of Allah said: Remove the burden from his back and set him free for he is cursed.’
Cursing a specific person
According to scholarly consensus, blasphemy is prohibited. Imam An-Nawawi said:
There is consensus among scholars that swearing is prohibited. Linguistically, to swear means to deprive or expel. In the Shari’ah it means deprivation of the Mercy of Allah the Exalted. For a person whose status or purpose is not precisely known, it is not permissible to deprive him of the Mercy of Allah the Almighty. Therefore, they [the scholars] they said: it is not permissible to curse a specific person, whether Muslim or disbeliever, unless there is a Shari’ah text that tells us that a specific person has died or will die as a disbeliever, such as Abu Jahl and Satan; and it is impermissible to curse a mount. However, cursing with general descriptions is permitted, such as cursing women who artificially lengthen their hair or those who have their hair artificially lengthened for them, women who tattoo or have their hair tattooed, the two parts of a Riba [interest] transaction, those who produce images, evildoers, oppressors, disbelievers and those who misappropriate the limits of their land. This is a general expletive that does not specify anyone in particular.
The curse comes from the gravest of grave sins
The Muslim Ummah (nation) has been plagued by some of its youth who joke with each other only by hurling curses and insults, while recklessly cursing fathers and mothers. They do this despite the fact that this is one of the major grave sins, as the Prophet said: One of the major grave sins is when a person abuses his parents. It was then asked: O Messenger of Allah, is it possible that one can abuse one’s parents? The Prophet replied: Yes, when he abuses another person’s father or mother and the latter returns the insult.
Parents are the cause of a person’s existence in this life and therefore should not be harmed, even by showing them signs of boredom and annoyance by using the word “ugh”. What then of those who curse their parents? These people are indeed committing a grave grave sin and deserve the supplication of the Prophet against them as in the Hadith where he says: May Allah curse the one who slaughters for the sake of something other than Allah, the one who protects a man who causes evil on earth and the one who curses his parents.
Cleanse your tongue from curses
If the curse is dangerous, obscene and offensive to this extent, then the believer, who seeks salvation in the Day when neither riches nor children will benefit him, will have to sharpen and purify his tongue from this disaster. He should remember the prohibition of the Prophet in the Hadith where he said: Do not curse one another by invoking the curse of Allah, the wrath of Allah or the fire of Hell.
We ask Allah Almighty to purify our tongue, heart and body from everything that arouses His anger.
