Benue Politics: As Alia calls for peace amid rumors of APC split…

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has reiterated his call for peace, unity and collaboration among stakeholders, stressing that synergy remains essential to achieving the desired “Renaissance” for the State.

Since assuming office, Governor Alia has consistently urged political leaders, community stakeholders and citizens to embrace harmony as the path to sustainable development and progress. His administration, he noted, is focused on rebuilding the state and keeping the promises made to the people.

The governor’s efforts are in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, under which Alia is seen as a key ally working to advance visible development projects. Observers say these efforts have contributed to a wave of defections from opposition parties to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue state.

However, recent reports published in Blueprint newspapers have sparked controversy, claiming internal divisions within the APC in the state. The publication suggests that loyalists of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, may mobilize against Governor Alia ahead of the 2027 elections.

The claims have raised concerns among party faithful and stakeholders, given Akume’s prominent role within the APC and his previous support for Alia as the party’s candidate in the 2023 governorship elections.

Political analysts point out that, as a senior government official, Akume is expected to promote unity and peaceful conflict resolution, particularly in his home state. The reported tensions, if unresolved, could undermine party cohesion at a critical time when preparations for future elections are gradually taking shape.

Despite the speculation, supporters of Governor Alia say her administration continues to enjoy broad grassroots support, citing ongoing development projects and governance reforms. Many residents also expressed confidence in his leadership and support for continuity beyond his current term.

Addressing the situation, the governor’s spokesperson, Tersoo Kulas, rejected any suggestion of political alliances that could weaken the administration or the APC. He reaffirmed that Governor Alia remains committed to party unity and inclusive leadership.

According to Kulas, the governor has consistently engaged stakeholders through meetings, party functions and consultations aimed at strengthening internal cohesion. He added that the administration’s focus remains on delivering on the promised agenda of the “New Benue”.

The spokesperson also highlighted the governor’s growing support base, noting that several opposition figures, including members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), recently defected to the APC in support of Alia’s development initiative.

As political activities gradually intensify, stakeholders have continued to call for moderation, dialogue and unity within parties to sustain progress and avoid distractions that could hamper the governance of the State.
