A leading aspirant in the upcoming governorship race in Ogun State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, has advised women to step up their game, take governance seriously and avoid the current descent into superficial femininity.
Iyabo Obasanjo is particularly annoyed that today’s modern Nigerian women waste too much time, advocating their superficiality at the expense of exhibiting the sterner qualities that women possess and for which respect is duly earned.
The professor of epidemiology and veterinary medicine who is currently engaged in high-level consultations with stakeholders in Abuja spoke during an interaction with media executives.
Hear her: “My aspiration to contest the governorship election in Ogun State should signal a wake-up call for women. It is an opportunity we must take very seriously and not let slip away.
“Naturally speaking, men, especially in politics, have moved ahead of us and the reality is that if we want to compete with them and win resoundingly, we must go beyond superficiality and the pursuit of glamour. In this context, I am determined to give my all to emerge as the first female governor elected in Nigeria.
“Enough with the symbolism. Women have real potential to lead and govern well. We need to raise the bar and up our game because there are no vacancies in politics.
“Skills-based leadership is what Nigerians aspire to. So, where can we women have time to waste precious hours adorning our hair, trying to do makeup and doing cosmetics shows while the men we compete with are already on the field?
“The time is ripe and the time has come for women to prioritize their mental, leadership and natural internal entrepreneurial abilities rather than making vain displays of physical adornments and attributes that will not earn us our seats at the governance table.”
Iyabo Obasanjo, who follows the political mantra “Iyaniwura”, has disclosed that he is in the running to utilize his wealth of experience, deep knowledge of the grassroots people of the State and his international exposure to unleash developmental steps that will transform the Gateway State and the people.
He conveyed his deepest appreciation to the people cutting across the four geopolitical divisions of the State, namely; Remo, Ijebu, Yewa and Egba for the overwhelming approval in a short space of time.
