The old politician and statesman Veterano, Capo Bode George, urged President Bola Tinubu to demonstrate the stall by restoring the governor of the state of the suspended rivers, Siminalayi Fubara, in the spirit of 12 June – Day of the Democracy of Nigeria.
In a passionate open letter he made public on Tuesday, the former national vice-president of the Democratic Party of people (PDP) invited President Tinubu to reply the same forgiveness that has extended to the governor of the state of Lagos Babajide Sanwo-Oell, raising the suspension of Fubara and other key political entities in the rivers.
George’s appeal arrives in the middle of the national reflection on June 12, the day she sets out to honor the pro-democracy inheritance of the deceased Capo Mko Abiola and the struggle that gave the way to the fourth Republic of Nigeria.
“If Tinubu could forgive the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Oell of the State of Lagos, then he should extend the same gesture to the Governor Fubara,” said George, adding that the reconciliation at the moment would honor the sacrifices made by the pro-democracy heroes and would preserve national unity.
In March, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state of rivers following intense political turbulence.
Suspended the governor Fubara, his deputy Dr. Ngozi Odu and all members of the Chamber of the State Assembly, citing instability and threats to governance.
A single administrator, IBOK-ETE IBAS retired naval chief, was appointed to take charge of the affairs of the state.
But George, a figure respected in the political circle of Nigeria and a convinced supporter of the democratic values, described the move as “an aberration” and said that he undermined the spirit of 12 June.
“June 12 is not only a public holiday. It is a solemn remiter of the resilience of the Nigerian people and the holiness of the vote. The suspension of an elected governor contradicts the principles that we claim to celebrate,” said George.
He appealed to Tinubu to reflect on his roots in the National Democratic Coalition (Nadeco), who fought military domain in the 90s.
“Tinubu himself was part of that struggle. Many of his companions died. He is lucky to be alive today – and he should show gratitude protecting democracy, not subverting it.”
George also invoked the legacy of his maternal nephew, Herbert Macaulay, widely considered the father of Nigerian nationalism.
“As a descendant of Herbert Macaulay, I do this appeal not as a partisan politician, but as a patriot who appreciates democratic governance.”
Observers believe that the political crisis in the rivers is deepening the fragile federal system of Nigeria, with growing calls from civil society and opposition figures for a peaceful resolution.
On June 12, the alleged winner of the annulled presidential elections of 1993 – a symbol of collective desire of the Nigerian people of democracy is commemorated in honor of Mko Abiola.
It has become a collection point for democratic responsibility and civic reflection.
George concluded his message with a direct office to the president: “It is time to overcome political differences. We use the spirit of June 12 to heal, forgive and support the democracy for which we all fought”.
On March 18, 2025, President Tinubu announced the emergency domain in the state of sparrows due to growing political tensions.
With an unprecedented move, the governor suspended, his deputy and the entire legislature for six months.
The suspension aroused criticism from groups for civil rights and opposition leaders who called him unconstitutional and non -democratic.
