The Borno State Government has sponsored 180 students for higher education in Malaysia and India.
The beneficiaries include 12 PhD students and 53 MSc students who will study at Sharda University, India, as well as another 12 PhD students and 73 candidates at Integral University, India.

Another twenty-nine beneficiaries are master’s and doctoral candidates who will pursue advanced studies at various universities in Malaysia.

During a handover ceremony held at Government House, Maiduguri, on Thursday, Governor Babagana Zulum urged the beneficiaries to devote themselves to their studies.
He said: “We expect each of you to demonstrate strong dedication to your studies and, in the future, to whatever professional role you take up. Your dedication is critical to ensuring that the benefits of your education contribute directly to the development and progress of Borno State.
“We are confident that you will honor this responsibility and use the knowledge and skills you have acquired to have a positive impact on our society.”
Zulum, congratulating the beneficiaries, noted that an additional sum of about $150 per month had been approved to provide for their maintenance.
He said: “At this point, I wish to congratulate you on your success. However, I must also remind you that the government has invested significantly in your education. As stated earlier, about N2 billion will be spent annually on your university fees alone.
“In addition, I have arranged for you to be provided with a monthly allowance of $150 for your maintenance. It is important to note that with great opportunities comes great responsibility.
Zulum also promised automatic employment to the scholarship recipients upon completion of their studies.
The governor stressed that upon their return, some beneficiaries will be offered teaching positions at various tertiary institutions in Borno.
He said: “Those of you who are pursuing a master’s degree, wherever possible, try as much as possible to obtain a PhD. In this regard, I want to request the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation to reach out to the tertiary institutions in the State and consider recruiting some of the current beneficiaries so that they can resume service immediately upon their return.”
Earlier, Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Eng. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, explained that the 180 beneficiaries would be required to pursue courses in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in India and Malaysia.
He further said that while ₦1,988,670,230 was disbursed to cover the tuition fees of the 180 foreign scholarship recipients, another ₦338,500,000 was allocated for local scholarships, benefiting 303 students.
