For Mr. Agustin Onyemaobi, once greeted as an environmentalist number one by Mbaise, life has taken a cruel turn that reduced a lively crusader of the community in the shade of his former self.
Once celebrated for its tireless campaigns to keep the roads of Mbaise clean and its bold defense to the corridors of power, including a memorable march towards the then military governor of the state of imo, the brigadier general, Ike Nwachukwu, to request the establishment of the war against indiscipline (Wai) in his local government – Oononyemaobi after an illness.
Confined to his bed and unable to look after himself, the tragedy hit again when he lost his wife. His only son, too young to endure the weight of abandonment and despair, took the street in search of survival. At home, Onyemaobi lay defenseless, pending the cold embrace of death that never came – only the painful reality of hunger, solitude and a loss of vitality that once defined it.
Once a family figure sweeping his clean community and inspiring the others to follow the example, Onyemaobi had become dependent on the handouts, reduced to asking for his daily bread. His difficult situation, however, has not gone unnoticed.
When Rev. P. Ben Nwachukwu-Udaku, a well-known priest and humanitarian who lives his life as Christ, heard of the suffering of the man who once supported cleanliness and discipline in the community, was deeply moved. In its characteristic way, p. He got in action well. He mobilized his volunteers, instructing them to visit Onyemaobi monthly to evaluate his condition, offer him assistance and provide him with food supplies.
Through this intervention, the priest has restored a glimmer of hope to a man abandoned by fate. The neighbors now speak of p. Ben’s intervention as “a miracle in human form”.
“God may not get off from heaven to help us, but send people like Fr. Ben to remind us that man is truly God to man,” said a resident, moved by the gesture of the priest.
Today, while onyemaobi may not have not yet regained his old force to support environmental campaigns, the compassionate support of p. Ben and his team assure that he no longer goes to bed hungry or is in total despair.
He is a touching reminder of how a single act of kindness can raise a soul from the edge.
