CJN Ariwoola vows to uphold independence and impartiality of judiciary

Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Olukayode Ariwoola, on Monday, reiterated the judiciary’s commitment to asserting its independence and impartiality in administering justice.

Speaking at a workshop on β€œJudicial Independence and Judicial Skills” in Abuja, Ariwoola stressed the need for judges to continue building their capacity to meet the expectations of the public.

While acknowledging significant progress in achieving judicial independence, the CJN noted that more efforts were needed to address the challenges faced.

He promised that the judicial institution would continue to strive to make improvements so that it remains a strong, impartial and independent arbiter of justice and the rule of law.

Ariwoola stressed that judges must improve their capacity to restore confidence in the judiciary, stressing the importance of a deep understanding of the law, a commitment to justice, and the ability to apply principles without fear or favour.

He reiterated that the independence and impartiality of the judiciary are essential in ensuring fair decisions based on facts and law, without external influence or pressure.

β€œContinued and ongoing efforts are still needed to address the challenges faced. We will not relent in seeking better options and measures that will ensure that the Nigerian judiciary remains a strong, impartial and independent arbiter of justice and the rule of law,” Justice Ariwoola said.

The CJN added that judges must build their capacity as a way of restoring confidence in the judiciary.

He said, β€œThe act and science of judging requires a deep and contextual understanding of the law, a commitment to upholding justice, and an innate ability to apply legal principles to complex and often vexing problems without fear of favoritism.

β€œI must also reiterate that the substantive requirements regarding judicial independence, judicial skill, and the art of judging are built on the public expectation that judges will decide cases before them fairly, impartially, and on the basis of facts.

β€œThe decision must be in accordance with the law, without restriction, improper influence, inducement, pressure, threat or interference, directly or indirectly, from any party or for any reason.”
