COAS directs NASME to intensify mission-oriented training for more effective combat
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has tasked the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering (NASME) to support rigorous, mission-oriented training in order to produce highly competent engineers capable of providing effective combat support in theaters of operation.
The COAS gave the directive on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, during his maiden operational visit to the NASME Headquarters, Makurdi. He highlighted the strategic importance of the institution in developing the technical skills and operational expertise needed to meet the evolving needs of modern warfare.
He noted that NASME remains a key pillar in generating the skilled manpower required for engineering tasks in formations and units of the Nigerian Army. The Army Chief emphasized that training must be realistic, practical and in line with contemporary operational realities to ensure quality outcomes and enhanced combat effectiveness.
In line with its command philosophy, the COAS reaffirmed its commitment to improving the well-being, accommodation and general living conditions of personnel within the NASME Barracks, emphasizing that the well-being of troops remains central to operational efficiency and morale.
Earlier, the Commander of NASME, Major General Idongesit Essien Ekpenyong, expressed appreciation to the COAS for his constant support to the institution. He briefed the Army Chief on ongoing training activities, operational commitments and key challenges affecting infrastructure and well-being within the barracks.
Highlights of the visit included an operational briefing, presentation of a commemorative memento and group photographs.
