133 Cardinals, gathered under the frescoed ceilings of the Sistine Chapel, made a decision in the third round of votes after two inconclusive votes on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.
The Papal Conclave officially began on Wednesday with a mass in the Basilica of San Pietro, chaired by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the College of Cardinals. Giving himself to the cardinals and thousands of faithful present, Battista asked unity, faith and prayer while the Church was looking for his next spiritual leader.
The first voting rounds were unable to produce a successor by Pope Francis, who died Easter Monday at the age of 88 following a stroke. The black smoke of the chapel fireplace had previously indicated that no consent had been reached.
The newly elected Pope is expected to make his first public appearance on the central balcony of the Basilica of San Pietro, where his name and the chosen papal title will be formally announced.
