The Network of Advocacy for Positive Impact Initiative (NAPII) has urged stakeholders to exercise caution and responsibility in discussions surrounding the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), underlining the need to support critical national institutions.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the Executive Secretary of NAPII, Comr. William Bassey, said the session was called to “set the record straight” on recent allegations questioning TCN’s operations and leadership.
He described the electricity transmission system as the backbone of Nigeria’s energy supply, connecting generation companies to distribution networks across the country.
While recognizing the right of trade unions and other stakeholders to raise concerns, Bassey warned that public allegations made outside established institutional channels could undermine confidence in the crucial national utility.
He highlighted that procurement, management and operations decisions at TCN are governed by regulatory frameworks overseen by the Federal Ministry of Energy and other authorities, ensuring transparency, accountability and compliance.
Highlighting the operational challenges of maintaining transmission assets across the nation, including in difficult terrain, Bassey called on stakeholders to allow TCN management to carry out its mandate without distraction.
He urged a patriotic and constructive approach, supporting dialogue, evidence-based discussions and institutional commitment to public discussion.
“Our position is simple and clear: national institutions central to the functioning of our economy must be supported, strengthened and constructively scrutinized through appropriate channels, not undermined by wild accusations that could distort public perception,” he said.
Bassey concluded by reaffirming NAPII’s commitment to promoting transparency, accountable advocacy and balanced public engagement in advancing Nigeria’s development goals.
