Court issues arrest warrants for British nationals and other #EndBadGovernance protesters

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, issued a warrant of arrest against British national Andrew Wynne and other Nigerians who took part in the #EndBadGovernance protests last month.

The judge granted the order on an ex-parte motion filed by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, but filed by Audu Garba.

Police charged the defendants with six counts of treason and terrorism.

Police also declared the British national a wanted man on Monday.

The IGP accused the 10 detained protesters of colluding with Wynne to plot the overthrow of President Bola Tinubu through unconstitutional means, among other charges.

Continuing the hearing on the motion, Garba said an ex-parte application seeking an order for the arrest of several individuals was being filed with the court.

The attorney listed the individuals as including Wynne (aka Andrew Povich), Lucky Ehis Obiyan, and Comrade Abdullahi Musa.

He said the fleeing defendants were involved in cases of conspiracy, treason, incitement to rebellion, incitement to dissatisfaction with the government, and terrorism, among others, which are contrary to Articles 97, 410, 413, 416, and 412 of the Criminal Code, the Northern States Federal Provisions Act CAP P3 LFN 2004.

He also asked for an order stating they were wanted on the charges.

The affidavit supporting the motion said investigations so far have revealed that the fleeing defendants were allegedly responsible for the storming and burning of the High Court Complex, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) office and the Printing Press in Kano.

The defendants are also alleged to have been responsible for attacks on the Government House in Kano, the Kaduna Investment and Promotion Agency office, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) office and several other buildings in August.

Garba said others who are currently at large are being tracked, hence the need for the app.

The lawyer urged the court to grant the request in the interests of justice.

Judge Nwite, who granted the motion, described the motion as “meritorious.”
