A new crisis is swinging the All Progressives (APC) congress in the area of the local local government of Ijebu in the state of Ogun, since the leaders of the party and the interested parties are abruptly divided on which the local government should produce the party candidate for the headquarters of the federal competence of Ijebu North/Ijebu East/Ogun Wateride.
The current legislator, Hon. Joseph Adegbesan is said to have been elected in 2023, he is observing a return offer.
But the growing opposition is increasing against his re -election for reasons of alleged poor performance and fear that his continuous stay will further marginalize other local governments in the electoral college.
Platform Times reports that the problems began during an EPC leader meeting held on Tuesday in the ijebu-Ife residence of the upper Capo Segun Osbote, where the division into areas of the political offices passed the discussions.
Frytr was learned that the gathering, however, degenerated into arguments on after a former president of the local government of Ijebu East, Otunba Timothy Adbowale, moved a motion asking that ijebu East would produce the next room of representatives.
Adbowale, whose motion was detached by a former councilor, the Hon. Niyi Ogunfadebo, claimed that Ijebu East deserved the ticket after producing the last representative between 2007 and 2011, while Ijebu North had occupied the seat for three consecutive terms.
But the position was resisted by some party leaders, including the Hon. Akeem Salami and Hon. Give Ogunde, who insisted on the fact that the ticket was open to all aspirants regardless of the local government.
The issues reached the head when the president of the EPC Est Ijebu, Otunba Adebayo Balogun, openly aligned with those opposed to the motion of adbowale.
His position infuriated many members, who accused him of betrayal, incentive and working against the collective interest of Ijebu East.
Sources of the meeting have reported to Platform Times that since then the members of the angry party have started to approve any vote in Balogun, accusing him of protecting the ambition of “an underlying representative” at the expense of his local government.
When he was contacted, Adbowale confirmed his participation in the meeting, but refused detailed comments, saying that the party leaders were still examining the problems.
In the meantime, a senior party leader who spoke on condition of anonymity justified the agitation for the turn of power.
He tracked down the political history of the electoral college from 1999 to date, observing that while Ijebu East and Ogun Waterside had taken their shifts, Ijebu North had dominated the seat in recent years.
According to him, the Hon. ONADEKO ONAMUSI (IJebu East) served from 1999 to 2003, followed by Senator Lekan Mustapha (Ijebu North) from 2003 to 2007. Hon. Segun Osbote (Ijebu East) held the place from 2007 to 2011, while the Hon. Inhabitun Abudu-Balogun (Ogun Waterside) represented the electoral college from 2011 to 2015.
From 2015 to 2019 and 2019 to 2023, Hon. Segun Adekoya (Ijebu North) occupied the position before Adgbesan, also from Ijebu North, took over in 2023.
“With this failure, it is clear that Ijebu North has had three consecutive conditions. Any attempt to keep the seat in 2027 will not only be unfair, but will also deepen the marginalization of other local governments,” said the party leader.
“Apart from equity, performance should also count. Why should a local government continue to dominate, especially when the alleged representation has not been able to deliver?” He asked.
At the time of the press, the president of the APC in Ijebu East, Otunba Balogun, was not possible to reach comments on the dispute.
