The United Political Party Coalition (CUPP) has demanded direct and unconditional release of the Sahara Reporter Publisher, Omoyle Sowore, by the police.
The activist was detained after he respected the police invitation at the headquarters of the troops in Abuja on Wednesday.
He was invited by the Inspector General of the Police Monitoring Unit for the petition written by an unnamed person.
There was a previous report on Thursday that Sowore suffered a broken hand when several police operators entered his cell and tried to take him to a secret location.
CUPP National Secretary, Head of Peter Ameh, made a call in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.
He described the arrest of Sowore as an unconstitutional act that should not be permitted to stand.
Ameh noted that Sowore, a 2023 presidential candidate from the African Action Congress (AAC), was entitled to freedom of expression based on section 39 of the constitution.
He stressed that the law guarantees the right to hold opinions and share ideas freely, without fear or interference from any authority.

“This arrest is a clear abuse of power and violates the principles of justice and accountability that is immortalized in our constitution,” Ameh said.
He added that the police must explain the reasons behind Sowore’s arrest to the public.
“Denying the guarantee cannot be justified and reflects the use of dangerous power aimed at suppressing differences of opinion,” said Secretary CUPP.
He insisted that Sowore must be released immediately and unconditionally, or charged with court if there was a valid case against him.
He questioned how an operation could reach the rank of Assistant Commissioner of the Police within 10 years of service.
According to him, fast promotions cause valid concerns about corruption and systemic favoritism in the police system.
Ameh called for public investigations to ensure justice and transparency in the troops.
