De Renaissance Patriots Fault National Assembley Over “Exclusionary” Southwest Constitution Review Talks

The De Renaissance Patriots Foundation has reproached the leadership of the National Assembly on what described as an imperfect and exclusive consultation process in the current constitutional revision, in particular in the south -western geopolitical area.

The group, in a statement strongly formulated on Monday, criticized the recent commitment between the National Assembly and the traditional sovereigns selected by the Region, stating that he excluded the indigenous critical parties, in particular by the State of Lagos.

The meeting, which was held on Friday 4 July 2025, focused on sensitive issues, including the recognition of 37 areas of development of the local council (LCDA) in Lagos and the controversial proposal to replace the indigenieship with residence in the Nigerian Constitution.

But the Foundation, a socio-cultural organ that supports the rights of the Lagos indigenous people, expressed indignation for the fact that its previous observations written to the National Assembly, which have had the refusal of the invoices that promote the residence with respect to the indigenierers-are ignored.

In a declaration issued by his media office, the group warned that any constitutional amendment deriving from a “selective and imperfect” consultation process would have deepened the discontent and risk the disturbance of the country in further crises.

“The National Assembly must correct this procedural failure and ensure that no resolution is advanced without a complete contribution from all the key interested parties,” said the group.

The Patriots of Renaissance have particularly frowning the eyebrows of what called a “deliberate” questioned “of indigenous core organizations in the consultation of Lagos, noting that relying exclusively on traditional sovereigns for such a critical national dialogue was unreal democratic and insufficient.

The Foundation added that the marginalization during the indigenous lagos in political and administrative decisions within the state was a dangerous trend.

He described attempts to replace the Indigeneship with the residence and formalize the 37 LCDA as a legislative strategy to weaken the historical and constitutional identity of the natives of Lagos.

“It is unacceptable that the legislation is pushed to cancel the indigeneship on the pretext of promoting the residence while legitimizing the Lcda legitimizing that do not reflect the will of the Lagosians. This is a move calculated to explore and dominate the natives in their land”, reads the declaration.

The Foundation accused the national assembly of having adopted a division position and warned that the transformation of Lagos into a “land of no man” through constitutional engineering would not be tolerated.

“The Constitution of 1999, a document of the military era, must already address issues of legitimacy. Any further tampering of its provisions, in particular those relating to the identity and rights of indigenous populations, must follow the right trial and bring people,” he added.

The group reiterated its commitment to protect the heritage and the rights of the indigenous people of Lagos and asked for a true inclusiveness in the constitutional revision process.

“The future of Lagos and Nigeria depends on a fair, transparent and inclusive constitution process. We ask that the voices of indigenous Lagos are respected and reflected in the result,” he concluded.

The declaration was signed by the average office of the De Renaissance Patriots Foundation.
