The national youth leader of All Progressiveives Grand Alliance (APGA), Eze-Oonyibuchi Chukwu, invited the former vice-president Atiku Abubakar to set aside his presidential ambition of 2027.
Instead, Atiku urged to support a credible young candidate or allow President Bola Tinubu to complete a second term.
In a declaration issued to Abuja on Friday, Chukwu advised the former vice -president to give priority to the transfer of political leadership to the younger generations, stating that it was time for the elderly of Nigeria to support the emergence of visionary young leaders.
“Rather than aspiring to run again in 2027, Atiku should gather his political allies to support a credible Nigerian. It is time to return the power to young people,” Chukwu said.
Remembering his past support for Atiku, Chukwu noticed that he spent resources in 2019 while he was the ATIKUNATION call in the territory of the federal capital (FCT), led by the hope that Atiku would defend the youth empowerment.
“Atiku challenged Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 and Tinubu in 2023. Now he wants to contest again in 2027. Is it the only one suitable to be president? There are Nigerian young people who deserve a chance”.
He added that any political discourse that excludes youth representation should be rejected by the Nigerian young people, stressing that attention should be on the renewal of leadership and the generational transition.
Chukwu claimed that if Atiku had insisted on his age, it would be more pragmatic to support the president Tinubu for a second term, provided that he undertakes to deliver to a young leader under the age of 50.
He quoted the example of the former President Bohari, who contested four times before guaranteeing the victory in 2015 but, in his opinion, reported the country of over a decade during his mandate.
“Now, Atiku seems determined to satisfy personal ambition to become president at all costs. But do we have to ask ourselves: at what price?” he said.
Chukwu said that the young Nigerians would support any leader, Tinubu included, “that he is committed to facilitating a generational change in leadership by 2031”.
