Nigeria: the house of representatives reproaches the Polytechnic Rectors

The Committee of the Chamber of Representatives for the Federal Polytechnics and Superior Technical Education has expressed reservations for the failure of the rectors of the Federal Polytechnics to honor its invitation to engage in issues concerning the future of technical education in Nigeria.

President of the Committee, Hon. Fuad Kayode Laguda, presented the position at the National Assembly of Abuja during which other members expressed disappointment for the fact that less than 30 percent of the invited rectors were present, as they accused the leadership of the institutions for treatment of the legislative arm with contempt and show little interest in efforts to reform and strengthen the Polytechnic sector.

“We called this meeting to ask if there is something you are keeping rancor against us or there is something we should do that we are not doing for you.

“Because if I could remember, it is the same committee that is pushing for a National Polytechnic Commission. It is the same committee that has moved the motion towards the end of last year that requires additional funds for the Polytechnic without you requesting, lobby or working.

“All of these must strengthen the Polytechnics. But in return the Polytechnics are not hiring properties or even collaborate, for us to carry out our work,” he added, adding that the failure of most rectors to participate in the meeting and the contempt for the clear instructions on how to participate in the meeting, he spoke volumes on their legislative attitude.

However, the rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Daura, Musa Gambbo, recognized the committee concerns and promised that the rectors would do better in the future.

“I would like to appeal to you that we are very happy with what you said. On behalf of my colleagues we would like to make all the necessary changes and respond to the information you need from us,” he said.
