The general manager of the Department of State Services (DSS), Tosin Ajayi, ordered the release of 12 Nigerians detained in unjust detention and multimillic compensation packages for victims.
Among the beneficiaries is Abdullyakini Salisu, a quarry operator who was arrested in 2022 along the Zuba -kaduna highway for the wrong identity. Salisu, who was erroneously linked to a suspicion of kidnapping, was exonerated after a new review of his case.
Salisu was released on Saturday and awarded N10 million, formal apologies and life care for life in DSS health facilities.
“This is only the beginning of what it can receive,” said a security source, describing the gesture as a sign of remorse.
The move follows a report by the Sahara journalists which highlights the prolonged detention of Salisu, which caused a 48 -hour case review ordered by the DG.
Platform Times reports that Saturday’s release is the third lot of such cases since Ajayi came into office in August 2024. On 1 July, 11 men previously detained for terrorism accusations in the state of Osun have been released and compensated with several million naira.
Freed was also Mohammed Ciroma Jr., a 400 -level computer student at the Modibbo adama University, Yola.
The DSS not only confirmed his innocence, but also helped to restore him to school and assigned him a complete scholarship.
An officer DSS said that officials involved in unjust detention are sanctioned, adding that the service is undergoing internal reforms aimed at promoting professionalism and responsibility.
In a separate case of 2016 revisited this year, the DSS paid n20 million in compensation to a businessman based in Jos who was incorrect by agents during the search for another suspicion.
Ajayi has directed the DSS Public Relations Unit to monitor media relations regarding the detention or unjust abuses and has promised rapid responses to verified requests.
The reforms align with the directive of President Bola Tinubu according to which no Nigerian should undergo arbitrary detention under his administration.
