Echegini: I can’t wait to play at WAFCON 2024

Jennifer Echegini is anxious to make her first appearance for Nigeria in the Women’s Africa Cup.

The midfielder has already represented Nigeria in two main international competitions: the FIFA 2023 Women’s Cup and the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Echegini declared that he hopes to step on the field in Morocco.

“It is very special. I have been in the main international competitions, but I have not yet played in a wafcon. This will be my first time, and I am very excited. I saw the last edition two years ago and I already thought:” One day, it will be my turn, “Echegini told Echegini. CafΓ©.

The Super Falcons are drawn in group B with Tunisia, Botswana and Algeria.

Echegini does not expect an easy trip for Western Africans in the group.

“It is a difficult group. On paper, we are the favorites, clearly. But in this type of tournament, that does not mean anything. No team should be taken lightly. We will have to be focused from the first minute and never underestimate the opposition,” he added.

The star of Paris Saint-Germain has made 11 appearances for Nigeria with two goals in his name.

However, he hopes to have a positive impact for the Super Falcons in Morocco.

“I am a midfielder, so my role is to create, organize and also write down when I can. I want to be a constant support for my teammates in all areas of the field. Nothing complicated, just do what I know how to do. Just be useful,” said former Juventus player.

Justine Madugu’s team lost the title of Banyana Banyana in South Africa in the latest edition of the competition also organized by Morocco.

They are expected to have a more respectable sample this time after finishing fourth the last time.

“We live with that. The pressure has always been there. When you wear the Nigerian shirt, you know that expectations are high. But that is something good, actually,” he said.

“It is those standards that shape who we are. Nigeria has won this competition several times. Like the new generation, it is our duty to continue with that tradition. So yes, there is pressure. But all, fans, staff, we like the same thing: victory.”
