Monday Governor Okpebholo from the state of Edo has expressed his belief that his victory on September 21, 2024, the governor election will be upheld, although there is an appeal delayed by his opponent, Asue Ighodalo from the Democratic Party (PDP).
The governor made this declaration on Friday during the meeting organized by supporters in the city of Benin, where he described the legal challenges by PDP as in vain and removing resources.
His comments emerged two days after the Petition Court of the Election of the State Governor Edo strengthened his election, rejecting the Ighodalo petition due to lack of achievement. Not satisfied with the verdict, Ighodalo announced plans to appeal to the decision, maintaining that the integrity of the election process must be preserved.
“I respect the justice, but this fight is not only about me – this is about ensuring that people in the state of Edo enjoy the right to credible elections,” Ighodalo said in a statement released shortly after the court’s decision. He confirmed that his legal team had begun the process of appealing.

The Governor of Okpebholo, however, remained challenging, said “Edo people spoke loudly and clearly on September 21,” he said through his spokesman, Fred Diaa. “They chose the right leader, and the decision could not be canceled by political games or court theater.”
He accused PDP to waste public funds in pursuing legal battles that he believed would fail. “They have stolen enough money from the state of Edo, and now they use the money to fight the courts without hope,” Okpebholo added. “But they will never steal the mandate given to me and the Congress of all Progressive (APC). Not in the Appeal Court, not in the Supreme Court.”
The Independent National Election Commission (Inec) has declared Okpebholo as the winner of the 2024 Governor Election after he surveyed 291,667 votes, defeating Ighodalo, who collected 247,274 votes.
