Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the upcoming Edo State governorship election, has vowed to make informed and independent decisions if elected.
In a Tuesday interview on Politics Today on Channels Television, Ighodalo assured voters that he would not serve the interests of any godfather or repeat past mistakes in managing relations with his predecessors.
Ighodalo, a former chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), has won the support of incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki, who has sidelined his deputy Philip Shaibu. Obaseki and Shaibu have been embroiled in a political succession dispute, while Obaseki recently reconciled with his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole.
When asked about how to deal with potential problems with a controlling predecessor or godfather, Ighodalo emphasized his independence, stating, “I will be myself… I have always been myself, and I will continue to be myself.” He noted that he would seek advice from experienced people to avoid mistakes but remain assertive and independent.

“My answer is: I have always been a self-made man and I will be a self-made man. That doesn’t mean I won’t take advice from others who have been through similar experiences.
“It is important for me to say that because only a slightly stupid person would undertake certain endeavors and types of work without asking for advice.
“Throughout my life, I’ve had mentors, I’ve had great mentors as I’ve grown in my profession, as a lawyer, as a businessman, in the boardroom, I’ve always sought advice from people that I admire and respect. So, I’m going to continue to do that.
“I will always seek advice so I can avoid the mistakes that other people make. I will be myself. Nothing will change because I am governor or whatever I do.”
Ighodalo’s comments come as he faces main rivals Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) and Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 21 election.
