Edo PDP’s leadership dispute was deepened when the guard committee rejected the orbih secretariat donation

Tensions in the Edo State Chapter from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) increased on Thursday as the Party Caregiver Committee, led by Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, firmly rejected the new contribution from the party secretariat by the head and orbih, which described the movement as a politically motivated effort to make the pole taking in front.

The drama was opened after the orbih, a former chairman of the South Zonal-South PDP, announced the contribution of a new secretariat in Benin City on Wednesday. During the opening, the orbih warned the Aziegbemi Committee to stop parade as a legitimate leader of the PDP in the state of Edo.

He accused them of colluding with former governor Godwin Obaseki to weaken and destroy the party from within.

In a fast refutation, Aziegbemi released a very successive statement rejecting the claim of orbih and stated that the orbih was no longer a member of the PDP. According to the Committee, the term of office of orbih officially ended on March 9, 2025, with the emergence of the Head of Emma Ogidi as the new Zonal leader.

“We were forced to respond to the nollywood style play that was arranged by the head and orbih only because of the many calls and questions we had received,” the statement said. “Leave it very clearly that the head and orbih are no longer a member of the people’s Democratic Party. He has no authority and stands to rent, donate, or assign any property to PDP Edo.”

The committee went further to accuse that the secretariat of the orbih claimed that donating was not only invalid but related to the opposition. “What is called the secretariat that is claimed to have donated is the facade. It belongs to the party that he now is openly served-government led by APC in the state of Edo-in which he is nothing more than a political employee,” said Aziegbemi.

While the orbih has not openly responded to the rejection of the caregiver committee for their donations, their supporters argue that their actions come from the desire to restore integrity and stability to the party in the midst of the growth of internal gaps.

People in the party say the latest confrontation indicates a deeper fracture in Edo PDP, who has seen recurrent tensions between factions that are loyal to orbih and those who are in harmony with the Governor of Obaseki, especially after the governor’s defense from APC to PDP in 2020.

Apart from the ongoing conflict, Aziegbemi urged a loyal party to remain calm and focused.

“We urged PDP members to ignore the antics and orbih and not disturbed. Reblashing our mandate remains our focus,” he said. “PDP guard committee Edo remains united, focused, and fully responsible for party affairs.”
