EFCC arrests woman for allegedly mutilating Naira in Maiduguri

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a woman suspected of allegedly mutilating the naira in Maiduguri, following a viral video that sparked public outrage.

The commission revealed that the suspect was arrested on Tuesday after a clip circulated on social media platform TikTok, allegedly showing her using a N500 note to wipe mucus from her nose.

EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, stressing that officers acted quickly after the video gained popularity online.

According to him, “The suspect was arrested following a viral video spread on TikTok, in which she was seen wiping mucus from her nose with a N500 note.”

Oyewale said the suspect was tracked down and arrested in the Maiduguri metropolis shortly after the video was released, adding that she is currently in custody as investigations continue.

“The suspect is currently being held at the Maiduguri Detention Facility while investigations are ongoing,” he added.

He also said the suspect would be sent to trial after the investigation was completed.

The act of mutilating the naira is a punishable offense under Nigerian laws governing the management of the national currency, with offenders liable to prosecution upon conviction.

This development underlines the EFCC’s renewed crackdown on currency abuses, particularly in cases amplified by exposure on social media.

Authorities have repeatedly warned Nigerians against the abuse of the naira, stressing that such acts undermine the dignity of the nation’s legal tender.
