The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) has released the former Governor of the State Sokoto and served Senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, the day after he was detained for alleged fraud withdrawal with a total of 189 billion.
Tambuwal, who represented South Sokoto in the Senate and previously served as Chairman of the House of Representatives, regained his freedom on Tuesday after meeting the guarantee requirements.
The former governor has respected EFCC’s invitation on Monday, arriving at the Abuja Commission headquarters at around 11:30 am, where he was interrogated and detained last night.
According to EFCC sources, the withdrawal being investigated allegedly violated the provisions of the Money Laundering Law (prevention and prohibition), 2022. “The withdrawal violated the law,” said an official, added that the investigation was ongoing.
An EFCC senior official, who spoke on anonymous condition, confirmed the release of the Tambuwal. “He has been given an administrative guarantee. He meets the guarantee requirements and has been released,” said the source.
Efforts to reach a spokesman for EFCC Dele Oyewale because official comments were unsuccessful, because calls and messages to the telephone were not answered.
This detention has attracted strong criticism from former vice president and candidate for the Democratic Party of the Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, who described it as a political persecution.
In a post on X, Atiku accused that the move was part of the efforts of the government of the Tinubu Bola President to force opposition figures to join the Decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“The only reason @officialeFCC has arrested the former Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, @awtambuwal, is because he is a member of the opposition coalition. This is a continuation of the administrative agenda led by Tinubu to harass, repeat, and separate opponents,” at that time.
