The Economic and Financial Crimes Eradication Commission (ECRC) has vowed to intensify its oversight of local government administration in Nigeria, following a Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to 774 local councils.
Speaking at a dialogue organised on Monday by Agora Policy, a think tank, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede stressed the need for good governance at the local level, highlighting three critical elements: accountability, transparency and citizen participation.
Olukoyede, who was represented by Friday Ebelo, EFCC Director and Special Duties Coordinator, stressed that “solid and forward-thinking people” were needed to lead the county governments to ensure effective governance.

He added, “In this regard, the EFCC has put the county governments on notice that their activities will not be as usual. Their activities will be monitored.
“We will make a deliberate effort to bring government presence to our people at the local government level.”
The EFCC’s pledge to scrutinize local government activities came in response to a Supreme Court ruling that declared illegal the practice of state governors appointing caretaker committees to run local councils.
