Eight children escape death as container falls on 2 cars in Kogi

At least eight schoolchildren escaped death after a 40-foot container fell on two vehicles in Kogi State on Thursday.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, Mr. Samuel Oyedeji, disclosed this to newsmen on Thursday in Lokoja.

Oyedeji said the incident occurred at Lokongoma market in Lokoja metropolis at about 6.00pm.

The two destroyed vehicles were a Toyota Corolla car with registration number Kogi LMA 190 AA without passengers, and a Nissan car with registration number Abuja RSH – 241FH with eight school children.

He said the accident occurred because a fully loaded container that was not securely attached to its trailer fell and hit two cars that were parked on the side of the road.

Oyedeji said: “The truck lost its brakes when it could not climb the Lokongoma hillock and started rolling backwards.

“As it rolled back, the truck hit one of the parked cars causing the container, which was not properly locked, to fall on both vehicles, trapping eight children inside one of the vehicles.

“Alhamdulillah, thanks to the help of the community who saved the eight children, four boys and four girls, we were able to deploy a rescue team.

“We have taken the eight children to the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja for proper medical examination.

He said the children’s parents had gone to buy something for them at a shop when the incident occurred.

“We have campaigned that containers must be properly locked to your trailer at all times, but truck drivers are not complying.

“We will sue the driver of this trailer as a deterrent to other drivers.

“Although the trailer driver fled, we pursued him and arrested and prosecuted him,” the FRSC commander added.
