Electricity workers suspend the strike at national level – Thage

By Victor Osula, Abuja

The National Union of Electricity Employers (Nuee) has suspended its indefinite strike at a national level declared on Wednesday, for unsolved well -being and operational disputes with the Nigeria transmission company (TCN).

This follows the intervention of the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who convened a meeting between the union and the management of TCN, Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (Ssaeac) and the Federal Labor Ministry on Thursday in Abuja.

The members of Nuee, who worked with the TCN, had declared an industrial action for the non -implementation of the minimum national wage, the inconvenience of workers, the non -supply of work tools and the materials, the non -payment of staff salaries since April 2025, the lack of operational vehicles.

The workers, however, suspended the strike following a Memorandum of understanding (Mou) signed at the end of the peace meeting.

A copy of the MO was co-founded by representatives of the ministers of power and work, respectively. Other signatories are: the representatives of the TCN CEOs and the operator of the National Independent System (NISO), for the Federal Government. The Secretary General of Ssaeac and the Secretary General of Nuee signed for the unions.

Among the agreements was the decision for the unions to consider the report of a permanent committee between 6 and 7 October 2025, in order to start its implementation in the same month. In addition, TCN and NISO must jointly evaluate the financial implications of the relationship and prepare an implementation plan for the presentation to the minister and the unions.

It has been resolved that both unions would recognize themselves with the Tcn and Niso direction to face other suspended problems. In the meantime, the Nigerian electricity regulatory commission (Nerc) has been aimed at accelerating the revision of the rates for TCN and NISO, allowing the implementation of the committee’s recommendations.

According to the memorandum of understanding, the government assured that no employee would have been victimized for participating in industrial action.

To this end, the unions have announced the suspension of the strike to give space to the resolutions to be implemented.

The Mou recites: “Following the ultimatum issued by the internal unions (Nuee & Ssaeac) to the TCN management on various work problems that passed on Monday 23 September 2025, the honorable Minister of Power, represented by the Director of distribution of planning, statistics and statistics of the Federal Ministry of Power have taken steps for the collection of eMbarcate exercises from the areas.

“After large discussions, the following agreements were reached: that the unions honored the Minister’s request to examine the Committee report by 6/7 October 2025 to evaluate the implementation from October 2025;

“The two organizations (Tcn & Niso) will meet to evaluate the financial implications of the relationship and prepare an implementation plan to be discussed with the honorable minister and the unions;

“The two internal unions will meet in another meeting with the management of TCN and NISO to resolve other issues accordingly:

“Nearc to accelerate the actions on the revision of TCN and NISO rates to allow the implementation of the relationship;

“No employee will be victimized due to participation in industrial action.

“On the basis of the above, the union agreed to suspend its action to allow the activation of these resolutions.”
