Empty, no ideology ‘: Falana, Bugaje blames the political parties for the troubles of Nigeria

The lawyer for human rights, Femi Falana (San), and former member of the Chamber of Representatives, dr. Usman Bugaje have accused the political parties of Nigeria of lack of ideology and of being responsible for the struggling growth of the country 65 years after independence.

Both statesmen spoke on Wednesday during the special transmission of the television of the channels for the 65th anniversary of the independence of Nigeria.

Falana, a senior supporter of Nigeria, criticized the structure of the political system of Nigeria, in particular what defined the “winner-toe-tutti” syndrome, which he said has rooted corruption, impunity and unconsciousness in governance.

“It is not possible to concentrate power in the hands of the party in power. The party in power must share power with other electoral colleges,” said Falana.

He insisted on the fact that proportional representation was the only way to deal with the governance crisis of Nigeria.

“The winning-deto-tutti-tutti system is part of the problems that we currently face. Without an ideological basis or an orientation for political parties, corruption will continue, the impunity will continue and the unconsciousness will continue”, underlined the lawyer of the rights.

For his part, Bugaje has complained of the failure of political parties to act as platforms for the recruitment of the leadership, describing them as “empty ships” without a clear distinction.

“I have said it several times: the political parties that we have neither content nor consciousness today, are lacking in courage and are not good at all,” said Bugaje.

He added that the frequent defections between politicians have shown only the void of the parties.

“Look at what’s going on today: what makes people move from APC to PDP or from PDP to the APC? Is because they are all empty. What really differentiates them?” he asked.

Both Falana and Bugaje have warned that, unless the political parties of Nigeria were renovated on the ideological basis, the nation would continue to face leadership, instability and underdevelopment crises.
