#EndBadGovernance protests: 6 Spaniards, 76 others and sponsors arrested, police say

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, yesterday disclosed that the Police had arrested some of the actual sponsors of the protesters waving Russian flags and calling for change of government in states such as Kano, Kaduna and Zamfara, among others.

Egbetokun spoke as the Chief Comptroller of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap, revealed that foreign sponsors of the flag by the protesters had been identified as living abroad.

This follows the disclosure by the Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Salman Garba, that his command arrested no fewer than six Spanish nationals in connection with the protests.

Garba noted that the commandos also arrested 76 others, including the tailor who sewed the Russian flag, and said the commandos were hunting down his sponsors.

“We have arrested six Spanish nationals and 76 other people, including the tailor. We found 23 Russian flags, we are tracking the sponsors.

“They were transferred to the Army Headquarters for their links to sedition and national security,” the CP said.

Protests in the North turned violent as youths began vandalizing public property and calling for the military to take over the country.

The military has rejected the call and vowed to safeguard democracy in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the Kano and Kaduna State Governments have declared a curfew to quell the anger of the protesters.

“Since August 1, no one has fired a shot and we have not used force against innocent protesters. We have only provided security for them. Even amid the protests, we have arrested several armed robbers, and criminal elements who were stealing and committing other offences,” Egbetokun and other security chiefs said in a joint press conference.

Critics have rejected the claims and accused the military of using violence against peaceful protesters.
