The National Assembly will hold an emergency plenary session on Wednesday to discuss important national issues.
The House of Representatives spokesperson, His Excellency Rotimi Akin, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.
He said the hearing would focus on critical issues that require immediate legislative attention.
Although the statement did not specify the issues that the lawmakers would discuss, there were suggestions that the session was held as a last-minute attempt to prevent planned nationwide protests over hunger and other economic issues scheduled for August 1.
The statement read: “The House of Representatives wishes to announce that, in accordance with the direction of the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD., a plenary session has been scheduled for Wednesday, July 31, 2024.
“The honorable members have been summoned from their respective constituencies to attend this important session. This directive was conveyed through an internal note issued by the House Clerk, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, Esq., on Sunday.
“The House of Representatives began its annual recess on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. This Annual Recess provides an opportunity for Honourable Members to engage deeply with their constituents, to ensure that the legislative process remains in line with public input.

“This period also allows for in-depth engagement at the grassroots level, which facilitates a deeper understanding of constituents’ needs and priorities.”
“The upcoming session will focus on critical issues that require immediate legislative attention. Honourable Members are expected to make necessary arrangements to ensure their attendance.”
In a similar move, the Senate has also set an emergency plenary session for the same day.
Senate Clerk Francis Akubueze said in a memo that matters of national importance would be discussed at the session.
The memo read: “The President of the Senate, His Excellency, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, has ordered that an emergency plenary session of the Senate be convened.
“Distinguished Senators are requested to make all necessary arrangements to attend as important national issues will be discussed.
“We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this interruption to the recess. Thank you for your understanding.”
Last Tuesday, both chambers of the National Assembly postponed plenary sessions until September 17 as members begin their annual recess, which will last seven weeks.
