England alert after the deadly Manchester synagogue terror attack

Britain was placed on high security warnings on Friday after a deadly terror attack outside the Manchester synagogue during Yom Kippur, making two people killed and three others were seriously injured.

The attacker, who was later identified as a British British citizen from Jihad Al-Shamie, did a piercing car and stabbed Foya outside the synagogue of Heaton Park’s Heaton Kongrek on Thursday. Armed officers fired dead in seven minutes from the first emergency call after learning that he was wearing a vest that seemed to contain explosives, even though the police then confirmed it was not functioning.

Greater Manchester (GMP) police confirmed the victims as 53 -year -old Adrian Daulby and 66 -year -old Melvin Cravitz, both of which were residents in the Crumpsall environment, which was home to one of the largest Jewish communities in the UK. The other three remain in the hospital in serious condition.

The authorities quickly declared the incident as a terrorist attack and announced the arrests of three additional suspects – two men in their 30s and a 60s woman – for the allegation of “commissions, preparation and encouragement of acts of terrorism.”

Minister of Home Affairs Shabana Mahmood confirmed on Friday that security had been tightened throughout the country, especially around the synagogue.

“We are really alert,” he told Sky News. “That is why there is an increase in police resources, not only here in Manchester, but throughout the country. Our priority is to ensure that our citizens here are safe and can live their businesses and live lives in the Jewish community and surrounding areas.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer left the European Summit in Denmark earlier to lead an emergency response meeting in London, promised to “do all my power” to protect the Jewish community. He is expected to visit Manchester this Friday.

But the attack also triggered criticism from Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who accused the British authority of failing to handle “Antisemit and Anti-Israeli priority that was rampant.”

The attack occurred when tension in the UK increased on the Israeli-Gaza conflict, which often triggered pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

On Thursday night, a protest “Global Movement for Gaza UK” occurred in London, which led to 40 arrests, including six due to attacks on police officers. Metropolitan police since then urged the organizer to postpone the demonstration planned to support the Palestinian action group which was prohibited on Saturday, but so far it was unsuccessful.

Mahmood condemned the decision to protest so fast after Manchester’s attack. “I was very disappointed to see the protests -the protest continued last night,” he said. “I think that behavior is basically not English. I think it’s not honorable.” He appealed to the organizers and participants to “take steps back” and let the Jewish community be sad.

British Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, preparing to visit the attack site on Friday, described the attack as “the tragic result of Jewish hatred.”

“This is the day we hope we will never see, but far away in the heart, we know it will come,” he said to X. “It has been so long we have witnessed a wave of endless Jewish hatred on our paths, on campus, on social media and elsewhere.”

Many Orthodox Jews only know about Thursday night attacks, after leaving the synagogue at the end of the prayer and fasting Yom Kippur, after turning off the phone and computer for a vacation.

Alex, a 31 -year -old Jewish company director who lives near the synagogue and knows one of the victims, told AFP: “That is something you know can happen. Of course, everyone in the community in recent years has experienced a kind of antisemitism … I think the conflict in Israel has clearly exacerbated feelings of revenge.”

Manchester’s attack has been described as one of the worst antisemite attacks in Europe since October 7, 2023, when the militants led by Hamas attacked Israel, triggered the Gaza War.
