Enugu government closes six illegal schools

The Enugu State Government has closed six illegal schools in the state.

This was revealed by the state Education Commissioner, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, on Saturday while enforcing government policies on how to improve the quality of education in the state.

Mbah said that this exercise was carried out to eliminate the condition of poor quality of education and lack of skills.

Some of the schools affected are Evangel School, Ivory Education Center located along Owerri Road, Asata, and Eastview Nursery and Primary School in Railway Quarters, Njemanze.

Others are St. Mary’s Kindergarten and Primary School. Michael, Asata, St. Bartholomew’s Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary School, Asata, and Olive Grove Kindergarten and Primary Academy, Njemanze.

The commissioner said that the exercise followed the ministry’s previous directive requiring all operators of educational institutions at the Primary and Secondary School level to comply with state regulations.

He stressed that the government requires registration and ministry approval for any school to operate.

Mbah said: “We are sensitizing our community about the state government’s education policies and how education must be aligned with the most advanced global practices if our children are to have the opportunity to acquire 21st century skills and knowledge of the modern workforce and be able to compete with their peers -their global counterparts. .

“We are giving them a four month grace period for all schools that have not yet registered or obtained temporary permission to do so.

“And we do this to stop the abuses and restore the dignity of education in our state.”

He expressed regret that some schools were operating under open roofs, collapsed rafters and badly cracked walls housing hundreds of students in poor learning environments.

He said the situation completely ignored the rules governing the establishment and management of educational institutions.
