Enugu Govt expresses the excitement for the Marathon Int’l race on Saturday
Since the stage for the highly anticipated international marathon of Enugu City World Athletics is finally set for Saturday 3 May 2025 in the state of Enugu after a world press conference was held on Friday, the government of the state of Enugu expressed excitement in the race.
The State Commissioner for Sport, Lloyd Ekweremadu Jr said that the state government is enthusiastic about Saturday’s race and is looking forward to having its sustainability beyond the edition of this year.
“I want to announce that due to the potential and economic profitability of this breed, the Governor of the State, his excellence Peter Mbah has approved that the international marathon of Enugu City will be an annual event. This will be an continuous process and we know that the economy of our state will be enhanced with such an international event”.
The commissioner also explained why the state decided to choose a marathon, instead of another sporting event.
“We decided to make a marathon because the road race involves many athletes at the same time and you can involve young people more with such a sporting event”.
For his part, the managing director of the Nilayo Sports Management Company, the consultants of the race, Mrs. Yetounde Olopade, praises the sore throat and the investments of the state government of Enugu in sports.
“Governor Peter Mbah has continually shown that he has a road map for the development of sport in the state when he takes a look at all the investments he is putting in sport to make sure that the state is an important home of power when it comes to sports development in Nigeria,” he said.
The caliber of the best dignitaries at the press conference further underlines the profile of the race, which is an first of its kind in the history of South Nigeria -Eastern.
Friday including the press conference includes; The Commissioner for Sport in the state of Enugu, Lloyd Ekweremadmu Jr, the MD of the Nilayo Sports Management Company, Mrs. Yetunde Olopade, vice -president of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, head of the Solomon OGBA, former director of Atletica World Athletics, ex Nigeria di Atletica with world athletics, ex Nigeria di Atletica with Atletica, the president of Athletics, the president of Top Atletica, the athletics top with athletic athletics Yusuf Ali and the legendary nkem Owo cinema star among others.
The Enugu City International Marathon should attend the participation of over 3000 athletes to and outside the country both in the 42 km race and in the 10 km race.
In the meantime, the governor of the state Peter Mbah will be among the thousands of runners who will participate in the race while performing the 10 km race from start to finish.
