Ese Brume finishes 5th as Nigeria’s medal wait continues after Day 13 in Paris

The Nigerian team has yet to make it to the podium at the ongoing Olympics in Paris, and the games have been going on for 13 days.

Medal hopeful Ese Brume missed out on Thursday night’s women’s Long Jump as she finished 5th in the final with a mark of 6.70m.

The African Record holder inspired Nigeria’s 1-2-3 entry into the final. Brume, Ruth Usoro and Prestina Ochonogor were in action in the final.

This is the first time Nigeria has fielded three athletes in an individual final at the Olympics.

Earlier in the day, Nigeria’s men’s and women’s 4x100m relay teams were eliminated from the preliminary rounds of their respective competitions.

Apart from that, Nigerian weightlifter, Folashade Rafiatu Lawal almost finished on the podium in the women’s 59kg category.

Despite the injury, he finished in 5th place in the event, with a total weight lifted of 230 kg.

Elsewhere, Ayomide Powei Bello and Beauty Akinaere Otuedo compete in the quarter-finals of the Women’s 200m Singles Canoe event.

Bello finished 6th in the second quarterfinal with a time of 49.24 seconds, while Otuedo was 8th in the 3rd heat, crossing the finish line in 1:01.82.

Nigerian athletes did not qualify for the semifinals.

Nigerian Record Holder Ezekiel Nathaniel failed to advance to the semi-finals in the men’s 400m hurdles.

Earlier, Nigeria’s Odunayo Folasade Adekuoroye lost in the quarter-finals of the women’s 57kg wrestling, and narrowly missed out on a place in the semifinals.

Odunayo had won her second-round bout against Fouzia Aouissi by VIN (Victory by Injury), and had a good quarter-final against China’s Kexin Hong, leading 4-0 at some points.

But the witty Hong fought back, scoring eight points in a row and eventually winning the battle 10-8 to end Adekuoroye’s run.
