Chiefs and traditional leaders will go to the polls today, Thursday, August 8th, to elect a new head for the National Traditional Council of Chiefs and Elders of Liberia.

The report says chiefs from across the fifteen (15) counties currently in Ganta, Nimba County, are ready for today’s election to elect new council leadership.

The election is the first of its kind for chiefs and elders here, some of whom are in their 70s and 80s, to conduct their own poll in having a new leadership.

Several chiefs, including Chief Robert Sehmeah of Nimba, who had earlier expressed interest in contesting, have reportedly backed off from the race to give way to their colleague from the Central Region.

The election is being held alongside a five-day orientation workshop for local government officials, which the Minister of Internal Affairs, Francis Nyumalin, is meant to enable local authorities to understand their respective roles and responsibilities, County Superintendents, and City Mayors, among other local offices.

Superintendents from the fifteen counties and mayors are in attendance.

Minister Nyumalin explained that the process will educate local leaders on their functions and responsibilities as local authorities in their respective counties.
