The European Union (EU) categorically denied reports that showed humanitarian assistance to Nigeria, especially in areas about food, nutrition, and emergencies related to health.
Sanggangan followed the July 25 press release by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) – also known as an unlimited doctor – where international medical NGOs accused that EU and other donors significantly cut funds for the deteriorating Nigerian nutritional crisis.
In a sharp response issued on Monday by the EU delegation to Nigeria and Ecowas, the block described the claim as “untuated and accurate,” insisting that the level of humanitarian assistance remains consistent with previous years and, in fact, can be increased.
“The level of EU humanitarian support given by the EU Civil and Humanitarian Protection Office (ECHO) in Nigeria in the first half of 2025 is actually similar to those provided in the first half of 2024,” the European Union said. “And, as did in previous years, the EU worked to increase the number with additional top-ups.”
The EU stressed that its support continues to focus on nutrition, health care, and emergency food assistance – sectors highlighted by MSF as a lack of funds. The statement also clarified that MSF had changed its original release, deleting direct references to the EU among the accused donors.
“The EU delegation records the revision version of a press release published today by MSF, which eliminates the mention of the European Union when talking about large -scale slaughtering by international donors,” the statement said.

When praising the work that saves the lives of MSF in Nigeria-including a program that is partly funded by the EU-blocks urges caution and responsibilities in public communication, especially those that can affect global responses to urgent humanitarian needs.
“In a humanitarian situation that affects millions of life, the importance of accurate public information cannot be exaggerated,” said Ue.
The EU also reiterated its commitment to support the most vulnerable Nigerian population. During the joint press briefing on July 22 with a respected minister for humanitarian affairs and poverty reduction, the EU ambassador reiterated the determination of the block to strengthen collaboration with local and global partners.
“The EU maintains its financial commitment and the level of general support in all boards within the framework of his partnership with Nigeria,” said the delegation.
A strong rebuttal came when Nigeria faced a crisis of nutrition and deeper food insecurity, especially in areas affected by conflict in the north.
Miscommunications about donor funding, EU warns, can damage trust and disrupt coordination efforts in fragile humanitarian landscapes.
UE asks all stakeholders – including aid organizations, donors, and national actors – to strengthen their efforts to fight hunger, malnutrition, and poverty, rather than causing unreasonable doubts over the existing supporting systems.
