The former secretary general of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), the elderly Anthony Sani, urged the former president of Goodluck Jonathan to ignore the growing pressure to join the presidential race of 2027, warning that such a move could undermine both its inheritance and the political stability of the country.
In a declaration published on Facebook on Sunday, Sani recognized Jonathan’s national profile and international respect, but he claimed that putting another southern candidate in 2027 – while President Bola Tinubu, also from the south, is still in office – would have intensified regional tensions and weakened the case for an equitable power rotation.
“The South already has a seated president. Pushing another southern candidate in 2027 risks aggravating the subdivision disputes in areas and eroding the moral topic by fairness,” said Sani.
He warned that Jonathan, who handed over the power peacefully in 2015, should protect the global acclaimed he earned for his statesman, rather than risking it in what could become a division and high -level race.
“Jonathan left the office with dignity. The return now could obscure that legacy,” he warned.
The former ACF leader also stressed that Nigeria needs a new leadership, not to recycled data, to guide the generational renewal and the innovative government.
“In order for the South to maintain political influence, it must adopt a strategic approach to the succession and the coalition building, not to be influenced by emotionally guided campaigns,” added Sani.
According to him, Jonathan’s place in history is already insured and the wisest course would be for him to remain an elderly respected statesman, focusing on the tutoring and on the guidance of future leaders rather than returning to partisan politics.
